Is a qualified teacher and has an MA in Counselling with special focus on School Guidance and Counselling from Michigan State University. She also has her PhD in Educational Administration with Guidance/Couselling as an area of special interest. She is currently employed supervising the implementation of the Department of Labour ABET Project in the Eastern Cape, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Northern Cape under the Unisa/Abet Institute. She has a wealth of experience in the field of education, having taught, lectured, and trained in the field of education.

She has been Acting Director and Head, at the University of the Transkei, of the following: Financial Aid Bureau (Jan 1992 – 1997); Bureau of Academic Support Services (BASS) (June 1988 - Dec 1990); Student Guidance and Counselling Centre (July 1987 – Dec 1990). She has also been an associate professor at the same university. Dr Makaula is now doing consulting.
