Meet the Winners:

The first HSRP Annual Grade 12 Essay Competition Results Announced: Meet the Winners

In June we announced a new writing competition for Grade 12 learners.

We asked Grade 12 learners from historic schools to vent their creative musings on the following theme:

“Historic schools: inculcating in young people appreciation for the rich legacy bequeathed by the alumni and celebrating the history and heritage of our schools”.

We received a good number of entries and the judges had a difficult time picking the winners. The judges were: Dr Sindiwe Magona – award winning author, poet, playwright and story-teller; Professor Andre Odendaal – honorary professor in History and Heritage Studies and author of several books; Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane – retired Archbishop of Cape Town and executive director of the Historic Schools Restoration Project.

We want to thank our wonderful panel of judges for taking time out from their busy schedules and doing a stellar job of assessing these entries.

A special Thank You to the principals and teachers of the historic schools for encouraging the learners to exercise their creative faculties.

Thank you also to all the entrants for displaying a deep understanding of the theme and for submitting such high quality and thought provoking essays which have rightly earned you the title, “Narrative Inquirer”.

Without much ado, here are the winners…let the drum rolls begin!

First Place goes to Kgaugelo Sehoole of Tiger Kloof Combined School in Vryburg. Kgaugelo will receive a bursary to the value of R10,000 and his essay will be published as part of an anthology of essays devoted to the historical schools in South Africa.

Second Prize goes to Skhulile Khoza of Inkamana High School in Vryheid. Skhulile will receive a bursary to the value of R5,000.

Third Prize goes to Chulumanco Sgcau of Adams College in Amanzimtoti. Chulumanco will receive a bursary to the value of R3,000.
